President's Message:
Dear Fellow Rotarians,
 |
As the Rotary year is in full swing, we find ourselves in the midst of our first fundraiser of the year- oranges and grapefruits for sale! Our mission is to take orders for fruit, $19 per case of Ruby Red grapefruit or Navel oranges and get those numbers to Gerry Barbelet, our intrepid Chairman. Please make his job easier by placing your orders before November 12, picking up the fruit the weekend it arrives (usually the first weekend in December, you will be informed) and collecting the money, checks are made payable to: Tarrytowns Rotary Foundation. To insure a profit of at least $2000, it is expected that each member be responsible for a minimum of ten cases. We make a $5 profit per case, so if fruit sales or fruit consumption isn't your thing, a $50 contribution to the Foundation will allow us to reach our goal. To our new members- the fruit is of exceptional quality and makes great holiday gifts whether by the case or in fruit baskets! Don't forget, vitamin C helps keep the common cold away!
|
In closing, to all a very Happy Thanksgiving ! In such uncertain times, it is important for us to take time to reflect upon the numerous blessings for which we all can be thankful.
Rotarily,
Joe G.
PS DON"T FORGET TO VOTE!
Club News:
October has been busy for the club with five meetings.
-
We started the month with Susan Greenberg telling us about her work with the Niger Women's Grain Bank. This organization has helped local women increase the food supply for their community and create a food bank to help others.
-
Next we heard from Michael Blau, Tarrytown Village Administrator who gave us an update on all that is new in town. Many remember Michael from his former days as our Village Administrator and we are happy to have him returning to our club.
-
Dr Lawrence Ruck, local Chiropodist shared his expertise on how to keep our back and bodies healthy. There were many questions after his talk.
-
Our fourth meeting was a formal induction of new members. For those who could make it, Joe presented them with their badge, a copy of the Wine & Jazz journal and a copy of our Duck Derby flyer. An overview of all our club does over the year was given so new, and long time, members were reminded of all the things we do for our community as well as the bonds we share and friendships gained.
-
Finally we closed the month with a talk from John Ravitz of the American Red Cross. Remember, get a kit, make a plan, be informed! Should you want your donations to be for Westchester, be sure to note this when making your donation. 92% of every dollar goes to charity work.
Duck Sighting
The ducks were sighted at our October 29th meeting and lots of fun followed with a special Jeopardy game after lunch. Those who didn't attend missed a great time with ghoulish gifts!

Person of the Year - We will honor Robert Kimmel and The Hudson Independent as our Person of the Year for his paper's excellent coverage of local community news and events. Our celebration will be held at a breakfast on Wednesday morning, November 12, 2008 from 8am to 10am at Tappan Hill. There will not be a club luncheon that day. Rotarian guests may attend for $50. See Joe, Mimi or JoAnne for more information.
Wine & Jazz - The date has been set for March 30, 2009. Work is starting now on this fundraiser with Mimi starting to put together gift baskets for the silent auction. It's not too early to make a monetary or gift donation to her now.
Duck Derby - Our newest fundraiser date has also been set for April 25, 2009 in conjunction with the YMCA Healthy Kids Day. Sponsors are being solicited and adoptions will start soon.
Every Rotarian Every Year - The Foundation's Annual Programs Fund is running now. There are thousands of charitable organizations working throughout the world that make a positive impact on those in need. But your Rotary Foundation is the only charitable organization funded by contributions from Rotarians, for programs and projects identified by Rotarians, and administered by Rotarians at the project site. The Rotary Foundation is YOU. The District goal is to receive a $100 contribution from each club member. With a $100 contribution or more each year you become a Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member Please send your check today to:
