President's Message:
|
Welcome to March, a traditionally fickle month that seems to be coming in like a lamb and hopefully for our Wine and Jazz, will go out like a lion!!
This will only happen if we ALL pull together and sell ads, tickets and raffle books! Our neighbors as well as each of us is feeling the economic pinch. People will spend money if they see value in what they are spending it on. Fortunately for us, the Wine and Jazz event is truly a "value." Great wines, great food, great jazz, a great venue and the fellowship of some pretty great Rotarians and their supporters are to be had for the price of admission, $60. Adding to that, chances to win fabulous prizes and to purchase some fabulous bargains at the silent auction would be enough if it weren't for the fact that the money raised goes right back into the community. Everyone wins! This is your selling point for ads, tickets and raffle books!
|
Remember- a successful Wine and Jazz will ensure that our community will benefit from the money we raise.
Happy Saint Patrick's Day...see you all at the parade!
Club News:
February seems to have flown by. We had excellent speakers starting the month off with Donagh Bracken, Author of Words of War. Many members enjoyed his talk and inquired on how to purchase his book (History Publishing Inc, 845-389-8161). We also learned about our economy from Dr. Mark Skousen whom the club insisted he give us some good news! Our assembly day was busy with the International club meeting and the Wine & Jazz group working on their fund raiser. We ended the month with a wonderful presentation by Heather Metcalf. She spoke about her organization, Artfully Unforgotten, and her work in Rwanda at the Gisimba Mermorial Center Orphanage using art as a medium to raise funds and awareness. Oh and we welcomed a new member, Evan Krouse of YES! Dental Laboratory, Inc. So we now have four new members to add this year!
St. Patrick's Day Parade - Members are reminded we are marching Sunday March 15th and assembling at 1pm on either Kaldenburg or John Street. The parade begins at 2pm. The Ducks will also be marching and members will handout duck derby brochures along the parade route. A reminder email will go out a few days before.
Board Changes - Donna Puff has replaced John Belluardo as Treasurer. John stepped down due to other commitments and remains on the board.
Breitbarth Update - The applications have been mailed and submissions have begun. We have also received two donations totaling $8,000 to the scholarship fund. Thank you to Steve Byelick for soliciting them.
Community Service - The committee will meet March 3, 2009 at 8am at the YMCA to review grant submissions. Gerry Riera will chair this meeting. Should anyone have any questions, please contact Gerry or Margaret Black.
International Committee - The committee met February 18, 2009 and is gathering information for our international project. Once a recommendation is ready, David Cartenuto will make a presentation to the club.
Wine & Jazz Update
Well the news wasn't too good at our February 25th meeting. Our Ad sales our down with the total at 10% where we were last year. The ads make up 60% of the income from the event. We need ads!!! Donations to the silent auction and raffle are also down. Ticket sales need to pick up. A big thank you to our newest member Evan who volunteered to mail letters to all chamber members soliciting ads for the journal and donations to the silent auction. We need everyone to get behind this event to make it a success. With all of us doing a little, we will get it done.
Duck Derby
Mimi Godwin visited the newly formed Lions Club in Sleepy Hollow and they will help promote our event which will be held Saturday April 25, 2009.
New brochures have been printed listing our new Grand Prize of a $1,000 AMEX gift card. Please be sure to discard any old brochures that have the TV listed as Grand Prize.
Please contact Mimi Godwin, mag1126@optonline.net, JoAnne Murray, jmurray@ambins.com or Donna Puff, Donna_L_Puff@keybank.com for brochures. The goal this year is to race 2000 ducks!
Every Rotarian Every Year
The campaign is still open for the Foundation's Annual Program Fund and 14 club members have contributed. While the District goal is to receive $100 from each club member, the board feels any amount is fine. All donations go a long way when used collectively.
Rotary International campaigns such as polio eradication and clean water are two of the initiatives that rely on this campaign. Please send your check today to:
